What is Moldova?

With a rich history that dates back centuries, Moldova is a melting pot of cultures, traditions, and landscapes. From its rolling hills adorned with vineyards to its captivating monasteries and picturesque villages, Moldova offers a charming blend of old-world charm and modern vibrancy.

Wine History of Moldova: A Journey Through Time

Legend has it that when God created the Earth, he spilled a few drops of divine wine in Moldova's vineyards. Whether it's just a myth or a celestial blessing, one thing is certain: Moldova's winemaking prowess is undeniable.

Moldova boasts one of the oldest winemaking traditions in the world, dating back to 5000 years. This proud heritage is deeply rooted in the country's fertile soil, ideal climate, and the passion of its winemakers. Along the centuries, Moldova has had various influences which impacted the art of winemaking in the region. Around the 2nd - 3rd centuries, during the Roman Dacia, Geto-Dacians were primarily drinking diluted wine.

As time went by, and with the spread of Christianity among local populations (9th century and later), wine had become an object of rite being used for communion. These circumstances made required that churches and monasteries produce or procure quality red wine. By the 15th century, Moldova was the main wine supplier to the Polish and Russian markets, making it a crucial element of the country's economy.

When it comes to competitions and its general stature on a world level, in 2020 Moldova won 956 medals across 32 international competitions, out of which 417 were gold medals.

Moldovan Food: A Culinary Adventure

Moldovan Wine: A Symphony of Tastes

Now, let's get to the heart of the matter: Moldovan wine. This is where Moldova truly shines and captivates wine connoisseurs from around the globe. The country's winemaking tradition, combined with its unique grape varieties, climate, and passionate winemakers, produces wines that are as diverse as they are exquisite.

Spanning over 128,000 hectares of mesmerizing landscapes, Moldova boasts the highest percentage of vineyards in relation to total agricultural land anywhere on Earth. Beyond the expansive wineries, the very fabric of Moldovan culture reverberates with a deep-rooted connection to the vine. Across the countryside, families continue their time-honored tradition of cultivating their own grapes, crafting sublime wines for personal enjoyment, and embracing the spirit of conviviality.

While Moldovan wineries artfully craft wines from renowned international grape varietals such as Merlot, Pinot Noir, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc, they also pay homage to their heritage. Traditional Moldovan grape varietals like Feteasca Neagra and Rara Neagra flourish, giving birth to exquisite red wines. In parallel, the delicate Feteasca Alba and Feteasca Regala grape varietals embody the essence of Moldova in their white wines.

Here's a fascinating tidbit: Moldova is home to the world's largest underground wine cellar, Mileștii Mici.
